Saraswatipur Tea & Industries Limited was incorporated in the year 1917. The Company owns Saraswatipur Tea Estate, which has a heritage of over 100 years in growing and manufacturing Tea.
With an area of 1016 acres under Tea, the Estate produces 1000 tonnes of Black (CTC) Tea and 300 tonnes of Green Tea annually. During the peak season, the garden employs 1200 workers daily.
CTC and Green Tea both come from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. CTC (Crush, Tear & Curl) is a method of processing, in which the tea leaves, post withering are passed through a series of cylindrical rollers to convert the leaf into small, even-shaped pellets. CTC Teas are fully oxidised. Green Tea does not undergo the process of withering the tea leaf nor is it oxidised post rolling.
CTC Tea from Saraswatipur is known for its golden coloured liquor and viscosity. Green Tea from the Estate is very popular and is acclaimed for its mellow taste. Every year, older tea shrubs are replaced with newer clones in a phased manner to improve the yield and to further enhance the quality of teas.
Leaves harvested in a particular year are divided into four cropping seasons, namely:
‘First Flush’ from the beginning of March to the middle of April
‘Second Flush’ during the months of May and June
‘Monsoon Flush’ between the months of July and September
‘Autumn Flush’ from the middle of October to the end of November
Tea produced during each flush has a unique characteristic that distinguishes one from another.
